Most new computers come with MS Office 2007 already installed. You may be thinking about upgrading your existing computer to MS Office 2007 (2008 for MAC). For information about licensing, support and how to acquire Microsoft Office, please see our "Software - Microsoft Office" page.
This new version isn't so much about new features as it is about the totally different user interface. Before you make the change, we recommend that you view the following demos:
Excel, Word and PowerPoint 2007 use a new Office XML Format. Office 2000/XP/2003 users will not be able to open documents saved in this new XML format unless they have the Microsoft Compatibility Pack installed. This means that if you are an instructor who has Word 2003 and your student, who has Office 2007, emails you a Word document in the new XML format you will need the Compatibility Pack to open it.
As an alternative solution you can save files in the 97-2003 file format.
Find out more about sharing files.
Most Office 2003 users received the Compatibility Pack as an Microsoft Update, however, if you are an Office 2003 user having trouble opening Word 2007 documents you can download the Compatibility Pack from the University's Softweb. You'll find it under "Utilities". If you do not have Administrator rights on your computer you must ask your computer support technician or Client Support for assistance.
The new graphical, user-friendly interface, called the Ribbon, is a strip of icons and galleries that contain the commands that were previously hidden under pull down menus. Frequently used commands are organized into contextual tabs on the Ribbon. See the Ribbon.
Click the MS Office Button in the upper left corner of the window to find most of the commands that used to be under the File menu in Office 2003 (New, Open, Save, Close, Print, etc.). See where the MS Office button is.
This is the biggest challenge for everyone! Not to worry.....Microsoft provides these great interactive guides that will help you find out where your favorite Office 2003 commands are located in each application of Office 2007.
The Quick Access Toolbar is located at the very top of the window next to the MS Office Button. It includes the Save, Undo and Redo commands by default but you can add more commands to it. See how to customize this toolbar.
Just click the Mailings tab on the Ribbon. See where the Mailings tab is.
The new default font is Calibri. You can change this by going to the Font dialog box, choosing a font and clicking Default. See how to get to the Font dialog box.
There's a new Save as a pdf feature which is available by installing an add-in. This add-in is included in the campus provided DVD. Find out about this add-in.
Microsoft has many self-service tools available online to provide a "just-in-time" learning experience. Once you upgrade to MS Office 2007 take a few minutes to go to the Microsoft Office Online Web site.
You can also access online help by pressing F1 while in any of the Office applications. See how to access online help.
