Change Password

You are required to change your MS password every three months. If you are using Microsoft Outlook or another program to POP your MS mail you will never see the Unix prompt that notifies you that your password is about to expire. Once your password expires, you must go through Unix to change it.

  1. Windows XP users, please skip to step 7. Windows Vista users continue to step 2.
  2. Go to Start and select Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  5. In the Windows Features box, select Telnet Client.
  6. Click OK. Installation may take a few minutes, so please be patient.
  7. Click the Start button on the bottom left of your screen
  8. Go to Run and type in telnet ms.cc.sunysb.edu
  9. Click OK
  10. At this point you will see the telnet connection window
  11. Type in your Username and your current password and press enter to log in
  12. Next type the command to change your password which is: "passwd username" (where username is the login name you use for your MS account)
  13. Verify your current password and then enter your new password (see example below)
  14. At this point your new password will be in effect. Write it down and keep it in a safe and secure place. Never share your password with anyone!
